Background & Origins
Belle Reve Psychiatric Hospital

In most official maps, Belle Reve appears as a small coastal hospital, built on the edge of the water where fog and tide meet. On paper, it began as a modest regional facility—part medical ward, part psychiatric clinic—intended to serve isolated communities that had nowhere else to go.

Over time, the world around it changed. As stories of metahumans, vigilantes, and impossible events spread, governments quietly searched for places that could hold people whose minds and abilities did not fit ordinary systems. Belle Reve, remote and already walled, was slowly rewritten into something else: a hospital, a prison, and a research institution layered on top of one another.

FOUNDING ERA
The earliest records describe Belle Reve as a charitable hospital built with donations from coastal families and civic leaders who wanted a safe place for long‑term care, away from crowded city wards.
TRANSITION YEARS
As cases involving trauma, unexplained strength, and unusual neurological patterns increased, a special wing was added. Officially, it was a “secure psychiatric unit.” Unofficially, it became the place where extraordinary individuals were observed, contained, and studied.
HIGH‑SECURITY PERIOD
Eventually, Belle Reve’s reputation shifted. It was no longer just a hospital; it was the facility whispered about in police reports and classified files—a place for dangerous minds, super‑powered inmates, and those whose stories blurred the line between patient and prisoner.
