In the newborn period, a cleft team (doctors, nurses, feeding specialists, and others) examines the baby. The focus is on:
  • Understanding the type of cleft lip and/or palate.
  • Making sure the baby can feed and gain weight, often with special bottles or techniques.
  • Checking breathing, hearing, and overall health.
Families are given education, reassurance, and a plan for the next steps.
